I read with deep dismay at the two choices for the Planning Board Commission — David Ensign and Peter Vitale. Peter Vitale supports giving developers bonuses (really?) for building affordable housing and a gondola in West Boulder. Wow! Maybe Vitale ought to take a field trip to the Pikes Peak Gondola near Colorado Springs to understand the negative impact on community and environment. Both men are vocal advocates for very high density and accelerated growth. And, there is no mistaking who the folks are behind Better Boulder — pro-growth, developers, Chamber of Commerce, realtors and outside investors with deep pockets.
As Mary Young said, “One of the things we are struggling with as a community is a certain divisiveness that I think we’re all growing weary of.” Each of the council members who voted for these two men might keep in mind that democracy and not divide includes all the Boulder citizens/voices and not just the bigger is better mindset.
At a recent council meeting, I watched John Gerstle give Planning Board input to council members. I remember thinking to myself here is a man of integrity, deep understanding of planning policy and above all a kind presence. He’ll be missed.
